Generally speaking, media has a tendency to highlight stereotypes. Whether the stereotype is good or bad they are a way to get a sample of a culture. I hope you had fun and either learned something or at least thought about how you see the images that we are bombarded with. Thanks for your time!

P.S. START FROM THE BOTTOM AND WORK YOUR WAY UP!  THIS IS THE END OF MY PRESENTATION

crazy-japanese.jpgI’ve heard of the crazy Japanese stereotype before. And in such things like game shows I believe it but I have yet to meet this crazy person in real life. Like I said before, I’m not trying to upset anyone. I took 2 clip to show the class. This first one is from MXC. I liked it for the fact that it is a crazy game show that not only us American’s like, but also because, I assume due to their participation, the Japanese. Notice that it also helps support that the Japanese woman is seen only for her body.

This other clip is fun because it is the one thing guys are most protective of. . . . their pride of course. And once again, it seems like a crazy game show compared to the American’s money and prizes game shows. In fact, does America have many game shows where contestants get hurt?

Searching for women on the internet can be a very dangerous thing. To keep the search focused I first went with the image of the geisha because not only is she also a famous Japanese icon, but many movies include the geisha.  I never meant to try and find anything else on the women in Japan but something came to me: Japanese women are seen as an object of pleasure.  This is especially true for the internet.

Even though I found a nice picture of a geisha, while I was trying to find a movie clip I found something else instead.  The girl in the video is dressed like a geisha but is there to educate, I assume mostly, women on how to talk dirty in English.  In class I showed the first English lessons, but left the third out because it wasn’t quite what I wanted due to the fact that it is more offensive and not as funny to me.

The modern image of a Japanese man has changed from that of the samurai to the workaholic business man.  He no longer fights with his sword but devotes himself to his job.  The main point that I’m getting at is the image of the Japanese man has changed from a fierce warrior to a corporate tool who’s only fun time is for him to go out drinking with his friends.

One of the most renowned warriors in history is the samurai. During class I was dressed in a gi and a hakama, just for show, but it is one of the main visual images that I associate to the Japanese. It’s a very traditional image and we see it quite frequently in the movies.

The next few post I will be doing are all related to the presentation I did in class. Again, I remind all that this isn’t meant to offend. While I want to entertain, I also what people to think if this is how we tend to view Japanese because of media and internet. In my opinion, what is on the internet or T.V. is most likely going to be a stereotype. The stereotypes I presented were the samurai, the business man, the geisha and the Asian woman as a sex object, and the crazy Japanese people who will do anything. But remember that a stereotype is a way so we as people don’t have to think about a person’s individuality.
